<image:caption>Fans of Naruto would be delighted to meet the 10-15 years old Orochimaru who was named after the anime’s villain for his aggressive and opportunistic personality. Alpha of the bachelor’s group which consists around 20-25 bachelors, Orochimaru does not have wives of his own. But his resourcefulness and aggression makes him both a lover and a fighter when it comes to sneaking opportunities with other alphas’ wives.</image:caption>

<image:caption>With so much testosterone going on in a group, running a tight ship would not be possible without his beta, Achuk. Only 5 years old, Achuk divides his time between assisting Orochimaru, and spending time with his favorite caretaker whom he has formed a close bond with. He can be found sitting quietly next to his caretaker under the observation deck at Platform B while keeping a watchful eye on the rowdy bachelors group.</image:caption>

Having lost his mother during a storm, he was chased out of his family by his alpha father at a young age. Without his mother’s protection, he is forced to join the bachelors with the hope that one day he would find his own family to lead.</image:caption>

      <image:title>alphas - ALPHA CLARENCE</image:title>
<image:caption>Clarence is around 10-15 years old and is considered one of the younger alphas. Named after one of the tour guides who has an uncanny ability to imitate the proboscis monkeys’ call, Clarence has the largest family in Platform B with around 20-25 wives. Young and eager to assert himself into the role of alpha, Clarence protects his family with fierce dominance.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mellow and gentle, Jacob was the oldest reigning alpha at Platform A.. Leading the biggest family in Labuk Bay, he has 20 wives and a total of 30+ family members. Jacob enjoys the presence of people and would stay very still for his close-ups while he waits for the caretakers to arrive with food. Update: Jacob had passed away during Oct 2021, bringing his long reign as the undisputed alpha at platform A to an end. A power vaccum had emerged, and several prominent members from the bachelor group are vying to take over his empire.</image:caption>

<image:title>proboscis monkeys - Not your average day monkey</image:title>
<image:caption>Appearances The proboscis monkey has a very distinct appearance. With big noses, pot bellies, and webbed toes, these monkeys may not win any beauty pageants, but they have a charisma of their own. Having webbed toes make them capable of swimming long distances when under threat. However, the well protected proboscis monkeys in Labuk Bay are accustomed to a comfortable lifestyle, and do not find the need to cross rivers to escape from predators or to find new food. Among the largest of Asia’s monkeys, male specimens can reach 23 kgs (50 pounds), and adult females can grow up to half that size. Male proboscis monkeys will develop a huge pendulous nose as they sexually mature, with the biggest nose of all taking on the role of alpha male. Adult proboscis monkeys possess a very distinctive coat of light brown fur that turns red around the head and shoulders, and grey around at the arms and legs. The fur around the pelvic region and tail is white. Basically, they wear tighty-whities.</image:caption>

      <image:title>proboscis monkeys - Habitat and Social Structure</image:title>
<image:caption>Found only in the coastal forests of Borneo, these monkeys are listed as Endangered on the Red List of threatened species, and are also a Totally Protected species in Sabah. Despite this level of legal protection, population studies conducted in 2008 revealed that the proboscis monkey population has declined by more than 50% over the past 40 years, and their continued existence is currently being threatened primarily by habitat loss and fragmentation. Proboscis monkeys generally lives in groups composed of one alpha male, several adult females and their offsprings. When male offsprings mature (~18 months), they leave their family and join an all-male group for protection and companionship. Females also leave their natal groups perhaps to avoid inbreeding and reduce competition for food. Throughout their lives, such moves may happen several times.</image:caption>

      <image:title>proboscis monkeys - Diet</image:title>
<image:caption>Peaceful and non-territorial, proboscis monkeys avoid competing for food resources with other primates such as long-tailed macaques and Orang Utans by feeding on nutritionally poor food such as young leaves, unripe fruit and seeds. Their huge chambered stomachs host an array of probiotics that help them detoxify defensive plant chemicals and digest cellulose. They also possess the ability to regurgitate food and chew on it again, a behavior that is unique among primates.</image:caption>

<image:title>silvered leaf - A monkey that changes colour, for good reason.</image:title>
<image:caption>Appearances Silvered Leaf monkeys, also known as the Silvery Lutung, have a unique feature: their babies are born a radiant orange gold colour. Experts believe that the babies are orange so that mothers do not lose them when they explore the forest. Their colouration helps them blend into their surroundings and camouflage them from predators which are usually orange-green color blind. A baby’s fur would eventually change to the silvery black colour of an adult monkey, a sign of maturation accompanied by a decrease in attention from the mother. By the time these infants are fully grey, they would be fairly independent.</image:caption>

      <image:title>silvered leaf - Habitat and social structure</image:title>
<image:caption>They are normally found across Borneo and Sumatra, as well as in parts of the South-Western Malay peninsula, the Natuna Islands, and other nearby islands. They inhabit mangrove swamps and nearby forest regions, and generally avoid travelling far from coasts or rivers. Superficially the social structure of proboscis monkeys and Silvered Leaf monkeys appear similar, with family groups consisting of one dominant male, and multiple females and juveniles. However, unlike the proboscis monkeys where the females frequently migrate between groups seeking to mate with a stronger, fitter partner, female Silvery Lutungs stay put in their family unit and the males fight for the right to mate with them. Hence, the lineage of the family is passed down from the females’ side, i.e matrilineal.</image:caption>

      <image:title>silvered leaf - Diet</image:title>
<image:caption>They are specialists in eating leaves. Compared to other species of monkeys that feed on fruits, they prefer to feed on tougher and more mature leaves. Also like the proboscis monkeys, they possess chambered stomachs designed for this very diet. Life in Labuk Bay Sharing a home with the proboscis monkeys in Labuk Bay is no problem for these monkeys. There has even been a case of a male proboscis monkey being adopted into a silvered leaf monkey family in Bako National Park. Mellow and friendly, they are so trustful of humans that they would even bring their babies up close. However, visitors should not touch these monkeys to avoid further habituation. Furthermore, these monkeys are wild animals and their behavior could be difficult to predict, It would be best if the visitors constantly maintain a safe distance from them.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Behind The Scenes - The Story Behind</image:title>
<image:caption>Back in Labuk Bay’s early days, the proboscis monkeys suffered from limited food resources during a particularly dry season. Staff and workers were surprised to discover a raid in their pantry when the monkeys developed a taste for coffee and pancakes. The recipe for the pancakes was then modified to only contain flour and water as a supplementary diet for the monkeys who enjoy this unique menu until this day.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Behind The Scenes - “It’s all about the nose.”</image:title>
<image:caption>Working with the proboscis monkeys on a daily basis, how do you differentiate them? The easiest way to tell them apart is by the nose! You can tell which are the males and how old they are. Their noses come in different sizes and have their own unique markings too. It’s all about the nose with these monkeys. What is the most memorable experience you’ve had here? Back in the earlier years, there was a male we named Putut, which means short and small in Filipino. True to his name, Putut had a shorter and smaller body than the average male. Despite this, he did manage to lead a harem for 2 months as alpha. Unfortunately, size does matter in the wild and Putut was displaced quickly by a bigger, stronger alpha. We think Putut was depressed and took the loss of his title very hard, he disappeared for months after that and we could not find him. Much to our relief, he showed up again later and the bachelors welcomed him back into their ranks, although he was never an alpha again.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Behind The Scenes</image:title>
<image:caption>What is the hardest part of the job for you? Although we try to care for the monkeys as much as we are capable, it’s impossible to expect wild animals to understand what we do and cooperate. With territorial disputes and challenges, injuries are unavoidable. While some monkeys allow us to lure them with food and treat their wounds, others are very cautious and skittish. Sometimes, we have no choice but to lose the wounded that succumbed to their injuries. What do you love most about your job? I enjoy doing research after spending a whole day observing the monkeys’ behaviour to further understand them. Labuk Bay has always been an attraction for documentary crews, researchers, and students. It’s always a memorable experience to exchange knowledge with them and help them with their research here in the sanctuary.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Birds - The Oriental-Pied Hornbill</image:title>
<image:caption>Native to South East Asia, this hornbill is the smallest of all the Asian hornbill species and is predominantly black and white in color. Did you know that a hornbill’s horn is called a casque? The casque is hollow, so not to add excess weight to the bird, and also acts as an acoustic chamber to amplify its call. Male hornbills have larger casques than the females. If you look closely, Oriental-Pied Hornbills have eyelashes, a trait unique to hornbills and shared among the different species. Like other hornbills, they mate for life. When the mother is hatching the eggs, she molts completely, leaving her defenseless and incapable of flight. Thus in order to protect his family, the father seals the mother hornbill inside a hole of a tall tree with mud, leaving a slit to feed the female and her chicks when they hatch. The hornbills in Labuk Bay are quite the lovebirds, usually showing up in pairs, especially when bananas (their favourite snack) are available!</image:caption>

      <image:title>otters - The dangers of being cute</image:title>
<image:caption>The smallest of the otter species, the Oriental Small-clawed Otter has a small, rounded head with a short snout, giving them a very cute and appealing appearance. Unfortunately, this cuteness led to a demand for them as exotic pets, which in turn has led to widespread poaching of young pups—only very young pups can be tamed. As otters are pack animals that travel in groups of up to 15, an entire family of otters could be harmed just to poach one young pup. As their name suggest, they have very short claws and strong dexterous fingers in order to grab hold of their specialized diet of crabs and shellfishes. This is in contrast with other species of otters which have longer claws in order to aid them in hunting for fishes.</image:caption>

      <image:title>otters - Hanyut’s Story</image:title>
<image:caption>Labuk Bay’s once domesticated otter Hanyut came to Labuk Bay when she was separated from her family as a young pup due to unusual tidal waves caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake. She was nursed by a mother dog who had her own litter of puppies. Several families of otters still roam the waterways of Labuk Bay, however since they’re typically active after sunset, they could be hard to spot.</image:caption>

      <image:title>otters - Unlike any otter</image:title>
<image:caption>Because of her foster family, Hanyut was very accustomed to the presence of people. Her behaviour is quite atypical of a wild otter as she was more a ‘puppy’ than a wild animal. She spent her days sunbathing on the observation decks and playing with her canine siblings.</image:caption>

      <image:title>otters - Sweet, loving, and cuddly</image:title>
<image:caption>Hanyut was affectionate and friendly. Not one to shy from strangers, she was always seen cuddling up to guests seeking pets and hugs. Unfortunately, Hanyut was lost to Labuk Bay when she was kidnapped by a couple of visitors. She will always be remembered fondly and missed at the sanctuary.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Slow Lorises—a small group of wide-eyed, nocturnal primates found in the forests of South and Southeast Asia —might look adorable, but think twice before snuggling up to one. The only venomous primate in the world, these creatures pack a bite that can trigger an anaphylactic shock in an adult human and is potentially fatal. Slow Lorises use their venomous bite during territorial disputes, and such bites are a major cause of premature death among captive Slow Loris population in zoos. The cute, wide-eyed Slow Loris is also a victim of the illegal pet trade. In order to make them more appealing to customers, they usually have their sharp incisors cut or pulled out, an operation that could easily result in death.</image:caption>

      <image:title>swamp critters - Blue Fiddler Crabs</image:title>
<image:caption>Also nicknamed the Popeye Crab in Labuk Bay, the males have one single large feeder claw while the females have two small claws. Extremely shy, the lightest footsteps are enough to send them scurrying back underground. However, pay attention to falling leaves and see these crabs scuttle out of their burrows to catch the leaves before taking them home! Fiddler crabs are scavengers that feed on dead plants, algae and decaying material and they play a vital role in the ecosystem.</image:caption>

      <image:title>swamp critters - Mudskippers</image:title>
<image:caption>They spend large parts of their day outside of water. As long as they are kept moist, they can breathe through their specialized skin and also by gulping in air —hence their constant mouth agape expression. Their stiff pectoral fins are their main means of locomotion on land; their pelvic fin is fused into a single suction cup like structure, which helps them hold onto slippery surfaces when they’re traveling up a slope. They make burrows by gulping in mouthfuls of mud and spitting them out. Mudskipper burrows can be up to 40 cm deep, imagine the number of mouthfuls of mud did that took!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Plants - Nipah Palm</image:title>
<image:caption>Nypa fruticans As the only true mangrove palm species, any palm-like trees you see growing in the mangroves is a Nipah palm. However, they do not tolerate salinity as well as other species of mangrove trees, so they typically thrive more inland, where the waters have lower salt content. Unlike other palm trees which possess an upright stem, the only visible part of the Nipah is their fronds (leaves). Their stems grow horizontally underground, and branches in a Y-shaped pattern. The Nipah palm used to be a highly commercially valuable plant species and are used to make brooms, roof thatchings, and even syrup! However with industrialization and mass production of alternatives such as synthetic fibers, corrugated zinc sheets and white sugar, the industry surrounding the Nipah palm has been largely relegated to the annals of history.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Plants - Kayu Ara, Malayan Banyan</image:title>
<image:caption>Ficus microcarpa The Malayan Banyan plant grows in its natural habitat of river banks and swampy flood plains, but is well adapted to grow in different terrains. Here in Labuk Bay, you can recognise these trees via their numerous aerial roots which hang down from its branches. In some older trees, these roots will eventually grow into thick prop roots that help support its massive branches. Despite its huge stature, the fruits of the Malayan Banyan are small and inconspicuous, dark purple in colour and the size of a small marble. The fruits are an occasional treat for the proboscis monkeys, and the favourite food of the Oriental-Pied Hornbills found in Labuk Bay.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Plants - Bakau Minyak</image:title>
<image:caption>Rhizophora apiculata The most common species of mangrove tree found in Labuk Bay, they are an important source of food for proboscis monkeys. The trees also provide shelter for them, as the monkeys prefer to sleep on tall branches, overlooking the river coast. The easiest way to identify these trees is by their prop and stilt roots which can be seen at the lower part of the tree. The roots spread over wide an area, providing a stable base for these plants growing on soft waterlogged soil, they also possess the function of desalination, removing salt from the brackish water they grow in. Wood from this species is hard and heavy, and could be used for the construction of beams and piling. It is also an important fuelwood species; as they’re the primary tree of choice for the preparation of charcoal.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Plants - Mangrove Fern</image:title>
<image:caption>Acrostichum aureum This species grows quickly and is the main undergrowth in mangrove forests. However, their quick growth proves to be a hindrance especially during replanting efforts, as they’ll quickly outgrow other tree species by up to 3 meters and starve them of sunlight. However in a mature mangrove forest, the mangrove fern is an important food source for animals as they replenish quickly. These thickets provide safety and shelter for smaller animals, and they are also an excellent nesting spot for various bird species</image:caption>
